Growing up on a farm in Yorkshire, England, Jacqui Webster always wanted to be a writer. Still, it wasn’t until she traded her beach house and job as a public health professor in Sydney for an adventure across two continents by bicycle that she finally decided to write a book.
With over thirty years of experience working to improve food policy, Jacqui began her career in the UK, before moving to Australia in 2007 to work for the George Institute for Global Health and complete her PhD in Public Health at the University of Sydney. Jacqui is currently a Professor of Public Health and National Health and Medical Research Council Investigator working on food and water security at The University of Technology in Sydney.
While training for triathlons in 2010, Jacqui met her partner Joe, the driving force behind their cycling trip. They spend their time between Sydney and the Central Coast – when they’re not travelling. A strong believer in embracing life fully while inspiring change and making a difference, Two Bugs on Bikes is Jacqui’s first book.

Jacqui Webster has always wanted to travel in Africa – she just never expected it would be on a bike! Inspired by her partner Joe’s adventurous spirit and a desire to step outside her comfort zone, she agrees to accompany him on a year-long cycling journey setting off from Morocco, with a vague plan to travel east across Europe and Asia.
Leaving their jobs behind for a year, they cycle 18,000 kilometres through 30 countries. Scaling the High Atlas, they stay with Berber families in Morocco, skirt the Sierra Nevada in Spain, brave the bears camping in the Rhodope mountains in Bulgaria and conquer the fifty hairpins over the highest pass in Slovenia.
But their sense of purpose is completely lost in Türkiye, and Jacqui begins to wonder why on earth she agreed to this crazy adventure. Barely surviving the heat, they arrive in Istanbul to find they can’t get visas for China. Land borders to Azerbaijan are also closed. They might have to give up.
Instead, in a bold leap of faith, Jacqui and Joe make a dramatic U-turn and head for Africa. Starting in Kigali, Rwanda, they cross rivers, traverse deserts, dodge wild animals, and forge connections with people and projects, all while heading towards Cape Town. It’s a trial of resilience, forcing them to confront whether leaving everything behind was their bravest decision—or their biggest mistake.
