Frequently
Asked Questions
Here are answers to frequently asked questions about publishing a book through Hembury Books.
Please get in touch if you can’t find an answer to your question
Is Hembury Books a traditional publisher?
Hembury Books is a hybrid publisher, not a traditional one. We help independent authors to self-publish their books to an exceptionally high standard.
As the author, you retain all the royalties from sales, which is different from the arrangement with a traditional publisher. Our goal is to provide you with the same care and expertise that you would receive from a traditional publisher.
Our authors invest in the upfront costs associated with publishing their book. You can check out the prices on the Publishing Services page.
Will my book be available in print?
Yes. Hembury Books offers an end-to-end self-publishing package for paperbacks and hardbacks, as well as ebooks.
It will save you a huge amount of time learning the various steps involved.
Where will my book be available?
Your book will be available at leading global retailers, including Amazon, Kobo Books, Walmart and Barnes and Noble. Bookstores and libraries around the world will also be able to stock it for customers. We also recommend selling direct from your website.
Do you publish all genres?
Yes, we do.
Hembury Books started out as a nonfiction publisher and in October 2024, we announced that we were expanding from nonfiction to fiction. We also publish children’s books.
We have published a wide variety of genres, including memoir, business, self-help, YA, autobiography, spicy romance, history, spirituality, children’s picture books, travel, philosophy, thriller, sport, historical fiction and health.
Can you help with book marketing?
Yes, we do help. We champion our authors across our various social media platforms, offer post-publishing support and host a virtual book launch on the day of publication. It is published on our Youtube channel, which has thousands of subscribers.
Who pays for the costs of publishing my book?
The author invests in the costs of publishing their book, and they retain 100% of their royalties for the lifetime of their book. This means that the author is set up to receive monthly payments from Amazon and IngramSpark.
How are you different from a traditional publisher?
Hembury Books has flipped the traditional publishing model. Traditional publishers cover the costs of publishing a book and acquire the rights to publish it. This means that they have the final say over most aspects of the book, from the cover to the title and even the content. That’s not to say that you won’t have access to extremely skilled and professional editors, cover designers and formatters. Rather, they are there to facilitate your vision for your book.
At Hembury Books, our author clients retain 100% of their royalties. Hembury Books does not receive any royalties from our clients’ books.
We love this model because we believe it is equitable for the author and it frees us up from having to select books that we think will appeal to the masses. It also enables self-expression, because we are not messing with authors’ characters or their message.
Do you have a submissions process?
No, we don’t. Our goal is to enable self-expression, so it is not a question of your manuscript being accepted or rejected by the publisher. This happened to founder Jessica Mudditt for years and it was heartbreaking – until she decided to self-publish Our Home in Myanmar.
We are not gatekeepers of ideas. We would love to publish your book!
We don’t publish content that is harmful or offensive.
Do you work with authors outside of Australia?
Yes we do. Geography is no barrier. The time difference may be tricky, but we should be able to work around it.
